Everyone knows that Oil won’t last forever, they just don’t make dinosaurs like they used to. Envelio is a spin-off from RWTH Aachen University that develops software for the digital transformation of energy grids. The energy transition requires smart and more flexible grids to integrate millions of renewable energy resources and new loads such as charging points for electric vehicles into the system. However, distribution grid operators’ IT systems and processes are not ready for this challenge. They are dominated by inefficient and inconsistent data management and many manual process steps. envelio provides the software as a service solution Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) to make grid operators ready for the future. By digitizing and automating essential grid planning and operation processes, the IGP is a key component for the implementation of smart grids and the integration of distributed generation and new loads into the energy system. The IGP is based on 5 PhD theses of the founders providing scalable optimization and machine learning algorithms, specifically tailored to the energy system. The IGP is already being used at various European distribution grid operators including i.a. Iberdrola S.E., one of the biggest utilities in Europe and Westnetz GmbH, the biggest German distribution grid operator.

What innovative and unique technology will we be showcasing?
envelio has developed the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) to support distribution grid operators (DSOs) in their future challenges and to make them ready for the mass integration of renewable energies and EV charging points into the power grid. The IGP is a digital and flexible DSO assistance system with three main application areas:
- Data quality: The IGP links formerly isolated data sources (e.g. from GIS, ERP, SCADA systems) and uses machine learning algorithms to correct data errors and complete missing data automatically. As a result, comprehensive and validated digital grid models are created on high, medium and low voltage level.
- Grid planning: With the IGP, many important grid planning processes can be largely automated. This includes e.g. evaluating connection requests for new distributed generators, finding cost-effective grid expansion measures to solve grid bottlenecks (considering both conventional expansion measures and Smart Grid technologies) or carrying out comprehensive grid studies for future supply tasks.
- Grid operation: The IGP provides detailed real-time information about current and future grid states. For this purpose, interfaces to the control system and measuring points are implemented. In case of imminent grid bottlenecks, the IGP determines recommendations for congestion management.

Indonesia stands above the so-called ring of fire where a natural disaster occurs more frequently among other areas. There are more than a thousand natural disasters annually in Indonesia killing thousands of life and damaging infrastructure cost no less than a million dollars. The disaster crippled local electrical infrastructures when the electricity was needed the most. The existing solution such as diesel generator set is not effectively operating due to the scarcity of fuel. Even when the fuel exists, the priority will be given into the transportation sector. We intend to introduce a portable off-grid solar energy and package it for heavy condition likes disaster areas. The electricity is critical for activities like medical, communication, search and rescue, and lighting. Solargency, solar energy for an emergency, was created to address these problems. The concept of Smart City today is mainly focused on innovations in the technology of electronic equipment, forgetting the importance of the infrastructure networks that support all these, due to the lack of integrated management and the ordering of these networks in the underground, causing billionaires losses every year.
INFRACITIES system was created with answers to the demands above and represents the Next Generation Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility for Smart Cities, ordering Natural Gas, Electricity, Water, Telecom and Electric Car Charger, inside a structure made by recycled plastic from urban waste under the sidewalk. Sewer is installed under the bike lane, with green infrastructure for rainwater collecting and filtering. The system provides a new way of thinking about urban design, especially sidewalks and bike lane, incorporating a joint project strategy with urban infrastructures, adding new forms of funding and gains in the joint implementation and management of the systems.
INFRACITIES system presented an average reduction of 30% in the facilities construction and 70% in operation, demonstrated through the implementation and testing in a real-scale pilot project inside a technology park during 2016/2017, and now is being launched a large-scale deployment phase, starting in the Foz do Iguaçu city, Brazil.

The main innovation our platforms demonstrates is how by exposing customers to the right weather and usage insights throughout a billing period we were able to reduce churn by 28% relative to a control group.
On top of the reduction in churn rate the platform also shows how providing detailed reporting (via click throughs and open rates) of customer engagement can provide significant additional value in terms of customer segmentation and insight.

Driving Digitization in distribution grids
The energy transition happens predominantly in electric distribution grids, where the majority of RES production units is installed. Also, the on-going electrification of transportation with electric vehicles and chargers as well as the increasing numbers of heat pumps affects the low- and middle voltage grid strongly. Most distribution grids today are operated as a “black box” without any real-time insight into this crucial infrastructure. In order to ensure that distribution grids will not become the next bottleneck for the energy transition, grid operators need to take better advantage of today’s digitization trends in distribution grids for achieving better grid transparency and thus higher RES shares at lower costs.
